We did not have food nor did we exchange Christmas gifts in July as expected, but we had a great artistic time. We had one of the longest meetings on record. We started with Brooke's "in progress" pieces for her exhibit at the Emerson in Bozeman this fall. Since she had shared the beginnings last month, these pieces have morphed in her special way although they are not near finishing. Have you ever seen hand pieced tea bags before? We played with placement of a movie set prairie dress that will be included along with repurposed fabric and tattered quilts.
There was more discussion on how we would like to approach this year's art challenges. It was decided in February, we would explore Neutral Colors. For some this will develop into a series; for others, it will be a continuation of the Neutral Colors design shown earlier this year. While not a locked in challenge, members decided they would like a "nudge". A different idea or Nudge will be posted each month.

Taking your earlier design idea or just continuing your neutral colors theme, this is the Nudge possibility for next meeting. (1) Define your parameters. This is a thing that won't change as your design develops. Consider your technique, size, colors. Your choice on what you wish to focus upon. Pick something that will not change from the last piece. (2) How did you use color, shape, texture and/or line? How important or dominant part of the work are they? What three things did you love about your design or use of neutrals? What three things did you think you could do better?
In our April meeting, Cynthia St Charles showed two new creations in her wind farm series. No pictures were taken as these will be sent to an invitational show soon. She asked for our input on which one to send in, but no consensus was reached. They were both beautifully different. Cheryl shared three new quilt tops she recently finished, playing with designs formed from cutting up and reforming basic blocks. I apologize for not taking pictures of these. We discussed recent calls from our regional SAQA representative who is proposing a regional show at a gallery in Idaho. More on this as it develops. There was a lot of discussion on the Big Sky Quilt Retreat. Thanks again to the Wyoming and Billings members who helped share wonderful art quilts with the attendees.

Women of Artistic Vision's (WAV) Stretching Boundaries exhibit looked wonderful on the stage at the Shriners' Auditorium in Billings. Thank you to Linda J and her helpers for hanging and taking down the quilts.

The stage was shared with the Textile Artists of Greater Yellowstone (TAGY) group. Their challenge quilts filled a good portion of the stage.

From the Big Sky Quilt Retreat and Show, the quilts were moved to the Plaza Diane Gallery in Powell, WY. Below are some photos of the beautiful display.
Each piece was discussed and we talked about where we would go from here. Should we add another color? How should we quilt the piece? Should we change anything? Make a series based on this beginning design concept?

Since the battery on my camera died, I didn't get photos of all the pieces presented, and I apologize if your piece is not shown here. Taneth's imprinted seashells in sand, and Marybeth's skeleton leaves come to mind.

Cheryl's piece (above right) is a beautiful example of using neutrals. Brooke asked her to turn it over so the seams showed, and everyone loved the texture of the back side.

Another great example of using neutral colors is Linda J's "Fried Eggs".

Additional ideas are shown below. Using neutrals is a difficult concept for some of our group who love color.

Brooke showed us her artist journal for the drawing class she is taking on-line, and some of the supplies she will be using in the class she is teaching a Big Sky Quilt Retreat next month. She also passed around some beautiful silk pieces on which leaves had been applied and boiled in water to extract the details of the leaves onto the fabric.

For next month, we will all digest the ideas and input we received this month, and either incorporate them into the piece shown, or make a new piece inspired by our discussion.

Seven members of WAV met on Jan 18th to make plans for the New Year. We discussed the Stretching Boundaries canvas challenge and it was decided that it will show "as is" at Big Sky Quilt Retreat and at the Plaza Diana Gallery in Powell, WY, in March and April. These will be the final showings of this challenge, and we will not take them to the Emerson this year.

Linda J and Brooke offered to have the group meet in their studios, when the building where we are now meeting sells.

There was an interesting discussion on how we would like to approach this year's art challenges and monthly meetings. Several members said they liked the Color Concepts we did last year, but would like to take it further. It was decided we would begin by exploring Neutral Colors. At our February meeting we will show and tell our designs and have a discussion about them. Then we are free to go back to this design, with the new ideas presented at the meeting, and work on it further. Or we may decide to incorporate a new color to the palette. Topics will flow from one month to the next, based on these discussions.

Since Big Sky Quilt Retreat is scheduled for March, we will not meet as a group that month.

In addition to the monthly learning series, we will have a Challenge which will be based on Calls For Entry that inspire us. Linda M and Brooke told about the upcoming SAQA Challenges. Kathy suggested we bring a list of interesting Calls for Entry, with details, to the next meeting.

It was decided to try a Christmas in July this year, with the theme "Recycle". This will be our yearly gift exchange.

Cheryl showed us her latest creation where she is using up fabric scraps by sewing them into strips. She also passed out books that she thought would be of interest to other WAV members.

Brooke has be invited to be part of "Fiber for a Cause" this year. Linda H has finished and submitted her piece for "Inspired by National Parks."Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-66695938796648318572014-10-20T10:33:00.001-06:002014-10-20T10:33:08.369-06:00October 2014

The October challenge theme is Contrast.
Ten members were present for this month’s meeting, and both finished and unfinished pieces were shown for the Contrast theme. Cheryl also brought some pieces from past month’s themes to catch up.

There are differing definitions to Contrast in art. In general, Contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama. Contrast in color can be depicted by using colors from opposite sides of the color wheel ie. warm/cold.

Some of us referred to "Contrast" and others researched "Contrast in Color", so we have a variety of styles for the Contrast theme
Next month's theme is Contrast.

Other Show and Tell items include Brooke's Butterflies, and Wanda's knitted socks.

Our Stretching Boundaries, canvas exhibit will be shown in Powell at Plaza Diana from March 18 thru April 28th, 2015. Those who have sold pieces from this exhibit are encouraged to replace them by March. They will also be shown at the Big Sky Quilt Show March 8-11, 2015.Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-77589082344536928312014-05-21T15:51:00.001-06:002014-05-21T15:51:20.701-06:00April - May 2014The monthly challenge for April was Primary Colors.
Kathy H returned the unsold Canvas Challenge pieces from Thermopolis, WY.

The challenge for May was Muted Colors.

Muted Colors

Muted colors have black or grey added. If using paint or dye you can also obtain muted colors by adding a bit of the complimentary color.

The photo below shows three pieces made with muted colors.

Following the meeting we were hit with a hail storm. Linda Mac and Marybeth drove under a bank canopy (drive-up ATM) and waited out the storm there. Others weren't so lucky and have damage to their vehicles, and I hear Cynthia had broken windows in her home. Muted colors = dark grey clouds.

Next month's challenge will be Secondary Colors: green, orange, and purple.. These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors. We will be meeting early (June 8th) at Cynthia's home, where, hopefully, the iris will be in bloom (providing the hail storm didn't destroy them all.)

COOL COLORS

This month's challenge was Cool Colors. Not only did we make art with these colors, but most of us wore cool colored clothing as well.

The meeting opened with a discussion about our canvas exhibit in Thermopolis. Kathy stated they are willing to keep our art there another month. Some people have not yet sent their sale prices to Kathy, so this is your reminder to get that information to her.

It was decided that if an art piece sells at one venue, it must be replaced for the next venue. If that artist doesn't want to replace their piece, another artist can submit a replacement. Kathy will update the notebook by removing the old information and adding the new. The notebook will then be ready to accompany the exhibit to the next venue.

We did not decide on an end date for this exhibit. Linda J is talking to galleries in MT about further showings.

Big Sky Quilt Retreat
Brooke and Linda J talked about the Big Sky event that will take place in Billings the week of March 19, 2015. Vicki Pignatelli will be one of the teachers. She was the founder of the Sacred Threads exhibits, which has now been taken over by Lisa Ellis. For more info about Sacred Threads, click here http://www.sacredthreadsquilts.com/

Marybeth has reserved the Plaza Diane gallery in Powell for March 2015. The entire building will be available for WAV and TAGY fiber art groups' displays.

Pegee offered to bring in her silk kimonos next meeting for us to snip and share. A challenge using the silk pieces was suggested. Marybeth said she would bring Artist's Tissue (bleeding tissue) paper to share as well.

This month's Cool Color pieces were passed around for critique and comments. Interesting techniques include: needle-felting, thread-painting, stamping and block printing, piecing; and applique.

Next month's challenge is Pure Colors (primary colors).
We all needed warm colors after the cold below zero weather we have had lately.

Present at the February meeting were: Linda J, Lynn, Brooke, Laura, Kathy H, Marybeth, Cheryl, Pegee, Linda M, and Wanda.

We discussed our canvas Stretching Boundaries exhibit which is currently at Thermopolis, WY. It was decided that we should wait until each show is over before setting up the next show, in case some of the pieces sell. Brooke provided Kathy with a substitute piece for the show. Kathy mentioned the small canvas (8" x 10") is difficult to transport, and suggested we make a cloth bag for it and attach it to the back of the frame of the large canvas. Pegee will purchase hanging wire and supplies and will attach to the canvases when they return.

There was a discussion on pricing, and various ways to do this. We agreed to send our sale price to Kathy ASAP.

Brooke told about a new website of Robert Shaw's which displays artists works: http://www.artofthequilt.com/index.html

Linda M passed around a copy of the hanging system used on the Beneath the Southern Sky exhibit in Australia. Since that show will be shown at both quilt shows and galleries, they devised a hanging system that will work for both venues. In addition to the 4" hanging sleeve, there is also a strip with velcro that can be opened up for hanging at a gallery. This is something we might consider for future challenges.
See the instructions here:
February was another fun and inspiring meeting. Next month's challenge is Cool Colors.Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-46979097433086712232014-01-20T10:33:00.000-07:002014-01-24T09:58:37.670-07:00January 2014Eight members and one guest took part in the first WAV meeting for 2014.

We discussed what to do about our Canvas Challenge of last year. It was decided that we will have a Montana Curator and a Wyoming Curator (by committee) to find venues for this show. Linda J volunteered to get the info from Phyllis about MT, and Kathy H will work with Linda M and Marybeth regarding WY venues. Kathy H took the canvases that were there to Thermopolis with her to hang at a new Bookstore/Cafe and be part of an Art Walk.

Linda M will look into showing the exhibit at the Mancuso Show, and Marybeth will find out about the Cody Library, and Plaza Diane in Powell. Kathy H also will look into further venues in Casper and Laramie.

The January challenge was No Color, or Shades of Grey.
Cynthia provided a handout with Critique Questions for our new format that we will follow for our meetings this year. We discussed each piece using this new format and it worked out very well. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, so have no photo of our beautiful pieces to share here. Anyone wanting to upload a photo of your art, please feel free to do so.

Next month's challenge will be Warm Colors.

Twelve members were present for our annual Christmas party. Delicious food and wine was shared, as well as a handmade gift exchange with the theme "green".

Everyone agreed that we learned a lot from our monthly challenges this year, and we will continue with this practice in 2014 with a focus on Color.
Our challenges will be s small format (8" x 10" or 12" x 12"). No one will be measuring!
Our discussions will focus on "why" we made our choices, rather than "how". These discussions will take the place of a "program" presentation. For more information, see Cynthia's comments in the right hand column.

It was suggested that in the summer months we have some "playtime" where we can explore new tools, techniques, etc.

Linda J brought a book New Creative Artist, by Nita Leland. Here is a link to her website :http://www.nitaleland.com/ called Exploring Color and Creativity.

Kathy H knows of a bookstore in Thermopolis, WY, where we can show our stretched canvas challenge pieces. She will follow up with Cynthia about this.
The WAV group met on November 17, 2013, and our topic was Scale, described as size in relation to another object. To the right are examples of Scale that were brought to the meeting and discussed.

We had good attendance this month with: Cynthia, Brooke, Phyllis, Cheryl, Linda C, Pegee, Lynn, Laura, Wanda, Linda J, Kathy H, Kathy L, and Linda M.

Brooke demonstrated how she uses MistyFuse as both a stabilizer and an adhesive. We all played with fabric samples that had the adhesive attached. Cynthia mentioned we could use a Bounce dryer sheet to clean the iron surface if some adhesive gets on there. Brooke uses a Mr. Clean sponge for this purpose.

MistyFuse can be purchased by the roll at http://www.mistyfuse.com/

Our Christmas Party will be held on December 15th. Bring food to share and a Green gift to exchange.
I am grateful to be part of this inspiring and encouraging group.

The meeting opened with a discussion about our Stretching Boundaries exhibit. Linda M gave an email of interest expressed by Sue Blakley who heads up the WY Fiber Art Trails project. Ms. Blakely has many connections throughout Wyoming, and wants more information about our exhibit so she can contact others about possible venues. Kathy H knows her and told more about her activities.
Cynthia mentioned that some venues want a fee, and the question of shipping costs was discussed. We decided to provide $10 for each piece we submitted to the exhibit to cover any shipping and fees. Cynthia collected the "pot" to give to Phyllis who was not present.

It was a great meeting, and, unfortunately, I forgot my camera to record it for this site. The design element for August was Perspective.
Linda M showed the piece with her granddaughters walking down the railroad tracts (to infinity), and a work in progress with glass bottles reflected on a glass shelf.
Kathy H enlarged photos she took of rock formations which looked like faces in the rocks, and explained she may begin a series with these images as inspiration;
Pegee had a baseball diamond with a bat and a ball flying thru the air, either toward the bat, or away from the bat, depending on your interpretation;
Cheryll's piece was a close-up of part of a flower (a bug's eye view), and since she will miss the next meeting she also made two pieces showing Proportion and Scale.;
Laura showed black and white leaves, with some overlapping others for depth;
Cynthia' view of windmills became smaller as they faded into the distance; and
Wanda's piece was the silhouette of a girl in the corner of a room, looking outward.
All were great interpretations of perspective.

There was a discussion on similarities and differences between Proportion and Scale. As I understood it, it was decided that Proportion is parts to a whole. such as 3/4 sky to 1/4 land in a landscape. Proportion is next month's design element. If I misinterpreted this, please correct me. Scale is the same object but shown in different sizes. I think we are all learning a lot using the design elements as our monthly theme.

Phyllis and Pegee discussed museums and galleries they have contacted about hanging our show: Stretching Boundaries, A Decade of Textile Art.

Cynthia suggested those of us who are SAQA members make our challenge pieces as 12 inch squares so they can be sent to the SAQA auction next year.Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-90758452703065186502013-05-26T13:10:00.000-06:002013-05-26T13:14:57.986-06:00May 2013, Challenge dueARTIST'S CANVAS CHALLENGE DUE
There were seven of us present, and we displayed our Challenge pieces. The beautiful pieces show the diversity of this talented group. We decided not to post photos of them at this time. Let Cynthia know of any venues you wish to consider for showing these. Marybeth suggested Plaza Diane in Powell as one of the venues.
The April Design Element was Line

WAV members experimented with Line for this month's lesson. The photo shows each member's interpretation, including: a line drawing of a NYC skyline; movement created by line; visual texture created by shadows of the quilt lines, positive and negative expressions of lines, etc.

Since Cheryl missed last month's meeting, she showed us both Line and Color this month.
She mentioned color quantity and ratios when describing her Color piece (upper left corner), which was a new concept to some of us and a good refresher for others.

Pegee provided a program on Pieced Strips, as taught by Carol Taylor. This is another way to include line in quilts.

Cynthia reminded us that our Challenge on the artist canvases are due next meeting. One should be 24" x 36" and the companion piece is 8" x 10", vertical orientation.
The design element for March was Color. Participating members were: Cynthia, Linda M, Linda J, Linda C, Wanda, Kathy H, Laura, Phyllis, and Marybeth.

This inspiring group brought samples varying from monochromatic and graduating color values to full color melted crayon creations.

The book New Twist on Strips & Curves by Louisa L Smith was passed around. Wanda showed a wonderful stripped piece she is working on, and Cynthia hung it from the stairwell so we could all see it in its entirety. This is a wonderful piece.
Linda C gave a program on her couturier sewing class in San Francisco, and showed several gorgeous pieces she is designing.
She also brought lots of hand-dyed silk scarves, and examples of ice dyeing.

Linda J gave a demo on the many ways to tie and wear scarves. She needs to write a book about this.

Brooke mentioned the Bozeman Public Library is accepting exhibitions, and this could be a possible venue for our canvas challenge. Reminder: The canvas challenge is due at the May meeting.

This was another fun and inspiring meeting. Thank you to all of you for sharing your talent. Next month our design element is Line.Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-31045357785509592242013-02-18T11:08:00.000-07:002013-02-18T11:08:24.241-07:00February 2013

Cynthia opened the meeting with a program on her method of binding quilts which incorporates the binding as part of the art. She also showed several examples of how to mount quilts onto artist's canvas. This was a very informative program which will help us all with our upcoming challenge. We will be doing two pieces: one 24" x 36"; and a related piece on an 8" x 10" canvas, both in vertical orientation.

Our design principle for this month was Balance. It was noted that if our piece is in balance we will feel at ease with it. If it is unbalanced we will be uncomfortable with it. We instinctively know it when something is out of balance. Kathy H had an interesting piece with individual parts that could be change around until you personally felt comfortable with the balance (lowest portion of the photo). Everyone explained the concept behind the piece they created, and a helpful critique followed.

Linda M brought a copy of the book Art + Quilt: Design Principles and Creativity Exercises, by Lyric Kinard. It is coincidentally set up like our meetings this year, as it includes learning exercises to make 8 x 10 examples of the elements of art and design principles. Very helpful for those of us without an art background.

WAV met on January 20th with nine members present, and began our new format of critiquing our work on design elements. Repetition was the element selected for January and we posted our art on the new design wall that Cynthia provided. While it is a challenge working in this small format, it was agreed that this is a great starting point for larger works.

Cheryl gave the program using Colorless Extender with tissue paper. This product is similar to matte medium.Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-68454693561794947032012-12-16T16:58:00.000-07:002012-12-16T16:58:14.079-07:00December WAV 2012Nine members attended the December WAV meeting, which began at noon on Sunday, December 16.

The group agreed to discontinue serving refreshments at the meetings. (people may bring their own beverages if desired).
The group agreed to resume meeting during the summer months.

A Stretcher Bar Challenge will be revisited. Participants are to create two fiber pieces that relate to each other. They are to be in a vertical orientation, and mounted on stretcher bars in a manner to be determined by each artist. The sizes shall be 24 x 36" and 8 x 10" stretcher bars.

The Christmas Gift Challenge theme word for 2013 is "GREEN". Create a gift for the gift exchange that relates to the theme word. All gifts must be hand made by the artist.

Seat Cushion Request - members are asked to create pillows or seat cushions for the chairs in the meeting room. These can be brought to any meeting - with the idea that they will be left in place for each meeting. The seats of the steel chairs we use measure 16" square. A cushion should fit that size and it will be best if they have ties at two corners for attachment to the chairs. Members may continue to bring seat cushions until all chairs in the room are covered.

Critiques - The group decided that we will conduct our own critiques by using a specified format (Cynthia will bring one, and other members are invited to bring one to the January meeting so a format can be agreed upon).

By way of developing group skills in the art of critique as well as building skills in design, each month there is a chosen design element. Members are requested to create a very small piece to bring in for the discussion of that specific design element. The piece should be no larger than 8 x 12" and may be of any medium. It may be a work in progress. All members work will be displayed on the design wall for the discussion.

*Participation in any of the challenges or critiques is optional, but is strongly encouraged.

The group has agreed to invite 4 individuals to become new members, bringing the number of active members to 14 (if they all decide to join). The new members will be asked to participate in the group challenges and to bring some of their work for show and tell within the first two months of joining. While there are no dues, no officers and no formal format for meetings - it is agreed that all members should be contributing by attending meetings on a regular basis (memberships that lapse due to lack of attendance will be identified as inactive members and may attend as a guest until space in the group opens up - if they wish to become active again.) It is agreed that the number of active members should not exceed 15, given the limited space in the meeting room. Invitations to join will be sent to 4 individuals.

As a way of keeping track of attendance, a book is to be kept in the meeting room. Everyone present will sign in so it is possible to keep track of attendance. There is a tentative plan to arrange for a future group show and it is agreed that only members who participate and contribute regularly will be able to show their work in any WAV show. The sign-in format will help us keep track of active / inactive members.

Cynthia will install a design wall in the meeting room. Members will be asked to contribute to the cost of the design wall - details will be included in the January meeting announcement.Cynthia St Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05627612491156423102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-79097589867789487752012-07-06T16:38:00.001-06:002012-07-06T16:38:51.615-06:00July 2012
The WAV group decided to suspend its monthly meetings for the summer because so many of us are off travelling. But I am wondering what you all are doing when you are at home? Have you tried any new techniques?

Six of our TAGY members (WAV's sister group in Wyoming) got together the morning of the 4th of July
before all the family gatherings and fireworks got under way. We tried ice dyeing. After soaking the fabric in soda ash, we scrunched it up into colanders and covered them with ice cubes. Next we sprinkled dye powder over the ice cubes and set them aside to melt. Some of the more creative members made ice cube parfaits with layers of fabric ice and die. We each took them home to "set" and wash out later, and I am hearing of some fantastic results. I will try to put up some photos next week, before taking off for Lake Tahoe.

Other news: Jeanne K was in the Spotlight on the NQA web site in June, and Linda M is in the spotlight for July http://www.nqaquilts.org/ Click on the photo to see the quilts.
Have a great summer.
Linda Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11007335852398915438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759054917774232807.post-15555963487999290032012-03-23T10:19:00.000-06:002012-03-23T10:19:24.120-06:00March 2012 The program for the March meeting was provided by Linda MacDonald with treats provided by Jane Neale.
Our WAV group met at the Yellowstone Art Museum Vault for our Christmas party. Brooke is artist-in-residence there and her time has been extended until June. The SAQA Creative Force show will be held from March 22 to April 10, 2012. Brooke will be holding a winter solstice program on Dec 22nd, called "Ignite!" Using an outdoor fire-pit in the parking lot, Brooke will demonstrate controlled charring of fabrics. In the tradition of Zozobra, in New Mexico, participants are encouraged to bring small symbols of an event in their lives that they wish to put behind them, and those pieces will be consigned to the flames.

Cynthia is curator of SAQA's Broad Spectrum: Contemporary Quilts of Montana and Idaho, which will show at the Ryniker Morrison Gallery at Rocky Mountain College, Billings from Feb 17 to March 30, 2012, and then go to the Denver National Quilt Festival from May 3-6, in Colorado. She is also the current "cover girl" in Quilting Arts magazine.

Our Christmas exchange theme this year was "Get in Shape". The creative minds of the group made lovely gifts based on this theme. Everyone brought tasty dishes to share, as well as a some wine. We all had a great time enjoying the food, gifts, and good company.

Next year's programs were discussed. It was decided that we would take a summer break from June to August since so many of us have other commitments during that time.

Kathy L announced that the "Under the Sea" challenge will be traveling to the Mancuso Denver National Quilt Festival, in Colorado, and to the National Quilt Association (NQA) show in Columbus, Ohio, in 2012. Kathy invited the WAV members to join the TAGY members in 2012's book challenge. Challenge guidelines are available on the December TAGY blog
http://textileartistsofgreateryellowstone.blogspot.com/
